Written by people who are really fond of the little critters and have years of experience and lots of splits under the belt, this is a practical guide for people who want to get their hands dirty and actually do a split with their own hive.

We have been native bee keepers for about five years and now have over 15 hives of our own but have split hives for many friends and clients as well conducting hive transfers from damaged hives and rescuing wild hives from places that were about to be destroyed.

We are very fond of Australian native bees and want to help you enjoy them as much as we do.

If you are nervous about doing your first split by yourself – We hope this guide will help reassure you at every step.

Good luck with your split and Bee Happy!

This booklet might be just what you are looking for to give your first hive split a go
- and to do it successfully!

 From the introduction -

"One thing we have noticed about Australian native bees is that they can't read!

We have read all the books, trawled the internet and attended workshops and think we know how the bees live and what's best for them.

Conventional information says the hive should face North East, get the morning sun, be painted white and not be kept close to another hive.

Other information says that hives should be taken over five kilometres for the six weeks after the split to stop all the bees returning to the original spot.

Something we discovered very quickly is that the bees haven't read the books, don't seem to have the internet and have only ever been the much adored star at a workshop!

Despite all this information available, the bees don't seem to have taken it in at all. They thrive in hives on top of each other, facing all directions on the compass and in hives the shape of castles and painted bright red.

We've seen happy healthy hives that have been split and placed only six inches apart.

The point is, that the bees manage to survive and thrive in most conditions, so if you are following all the conventional wisdom out there, advice you probably won't go wrong, no matter what the hive shape, colour, placement or direction!

As long as you don't destroy so much of their home that they can't rebuild and restock before winter, they will work it out. It will just take a little more time if your split isn't as neat, not as quick or you're not sure where to put the hives afterwards!

So relax, your bees are in good hands. If you are prepared to read up about how to split a native bee hive, you are definitely the right person to own a hive! Lets get on with it!"
